Classic Ballet Concludes BTCA’s Fourteenth Season

Ballet Theatre of Carmel Academy (BTCA) is set to perform ‘The Sleeping Beauty’ May 26 and 27. The performances round out BTCA’s fourteenth season.

The production offers an opportunity for dancers at all experience and age levels. BTCA’s ‘Be a Fairy’ program is also a chance for young children to learn and, in some cases, introduces them to the ballet world. Other cast members include dancers all the way up to Seniors in high school. Guest artists, some college age as well as two former and one current professional, blend their skills into the production experience.

“The mix of dancers is interesting,” says Jane Hachiya-Weiner, co-Artistic Director of BTCA with her husband Frank Weiner. “The older dancers provide more than an example of their considerable talent and skill, and they are aware much younger eyes are watching. We have a particularly well-balanced and enthusiastic group, and it is a young cast overall.”

Production sponsors include Shimmy Dancewear, Excell for Life Family Care & Pediatrics, Kinney Dancewear, and Moonbug Photography. “Excellent partners make for an excellent production, we’re so grateful to have them,” says Hachiya-Weiner.

‘The Sleeping Beauty’ features music composed by Piotr Tchaikovsky and is an adaptation of Charles Perrault’s 1697 story “The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood.” The ballet debuted in 1890 with choreography by Marius Petipa, a longtime collaborator of Tchaikovsky.

“Performing is an important personal experience for the dancer, and for the audience it may be someone’s first ballet,” adds Hachiya-Weiner. “We strive to make every performance shine for both these reasons, and to pay respect to the beautiful artistry Tchaikovsky and Petipa conceived.”

BTCA performs ‘The Sleeping Beauty’ May 26 at 7:30 pm and May 27 at 2:00 pm. Both performances will be at the STAR Bank Performing Arts Center in Zionsville. Click here for ticket information.

BTCA is a non-profit organization with dance studios on the north side of Indianapolis.
