Ballet Theatre of Carmel Academy Performs Cinderella

Prokofiev’s Bright Composition Marks BTCA’s Eleventh Season

Ballet Theatre of Carmel Academy (BTCA) is set to perform Cinderella June 12 and 13 at Marian University Theatre. The conclusion of BTCA’s eleventh season brings the classic folk tale to life.

“It is a special, inspirational show,” says Jane Hachiya-Weiner, co-Artistic Director of BTCA with her husband Frank Weiner. “Most of all it’s entertaining and fun, and a wonderful platform for our dancers to showcase the fruit of their efforts. The music is lovely, but what we really love is featuring our students’ talents.”

Cinderella features music composed by Sergei Prokofiev. The composition is acknowledged as one of his most bright and melodious works. Prokofiev’s signature composition debuted in 1945 at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow.

The ballet is, of course, an adaptation of Charles Perrault’s 1697 story Cinderella or The Little Glass Slipper that promotes the moral: though beauty may be a treasure, graciousness is priceless.

Traditionally, however, the ballet doesn’t stand on moral lessons, but on its humor. The ‘wicked’ stepsisters are more the flighty, hapless stepsisters in this interpretation. Ms. Hachiya-Weiner adds, “It’s okay to laugh! We’re intent on making sure you do.”

The spring show is also an opportunity to highlight BTCA’s graduating seniors. “We never say ‘goodbye,’” says Hachiya-Weiner, “but it’s important to celebrate each person. And, yes, we miss them all.”

BTCA performs Cinderella twice on both days: June 12 at 2:00 pm and again at 7:30 pm, with the same times repeated on June 13. The performances will be at the Marian University Theatre. Ticket information will be available soon, visit BalletTheatreofCarmel.org for more information. Digital Access Tickets will also be available.

BTCA is a non-profit organization with dance studios on the north side of Indianapolis.
